“250 GTO”

A collaboration with 11-year-old artist Graham Roxbury, whose abstract background work gives this piece its depth and motion.

Want to collaborate with me on my next piece?”

A few weeks ago I met Graham Roxbury, an 11-year-old artist with real instinct for abstract work, and his mother, an artist of remarkable talent and standing, Olivia Bennett. I asked if Graham would collaborate with me on my next piece, with him taking on the background. I loved the energy in his abstract work and had a feeling it would make the car pop.

It did more than that. Working alongside a young artist who paints with that much freedom pushed me somewhere new with my own brushwork, you can see it in the way the back end breaks apart into that raw, gestural spray, like the car is outrunning its own shadow.

Graham and his mom invited me to show the piece at their upcoming mother-son art exhibit. Getting to make something with an 11-year-old who already has that kind of eye, and then being welcomed into his family’s show, felt like a gift I wasn’t expecting, a reminder that joy and connection can show up right alongside harder things happening in life.
