“we don’t need to shout to be noticed”

During a recent trip to Vermont I found myself completely inspired. The property where I stayed held an extraordinary art collection and the Milton Averys especially caught my eye. Their quiet confidence and playful brushwork unlocked something in me and brought back a more instinctive childlike freedom in drawing. Out of that moment came the spark for a new series I am calling “Cars & Women”.

The first work in this series began as a 7” x 10” graphite pencil drawing on medium gray mixed media paper. It is a study that will eventually become a painting but it also stands on its own as a framed piece. The title says it all: “We Don’t Need to Shout to Be Noticed.”

In this work a classic Porsche 911 embodies raw mechanical purity: air cooled, analog, unapologetically performance driven. Its curves, vents and Carrera tail are not only aesthetic but functional, projecting independence, control and the thrill of the drive.

Balancing that energy is the presence of a poised woman. She brings sophistication, poise and timeless style rendered in high contrast simplicity. She does not compete with the car’s presence; she elevates it. Her elegance adds an emotional layer that suggests this machine is not just about speed or engineering but about lifestyle, romance and allure.

Together they create a mood of confident nonchalance. The image feels cool without trying too hard, refined yet daring, restrained yet undeniably sensual. It captures the essence of old world glamour meeting German precision.
